CAMERON HIGHLANDS – A 58-year-old German man died after falling into a hole while hiking along Jungle Trail 10 in Tanah Rata here yesterday.
The victim, Hasselbusch Joerg, 58, reportedly fell into a hole, believed to be a former water channel, while hiking with his partner, Hasselbusch Marina, 57.
Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division for the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Mohd Salahuddin Isa, stated that they received an emergency call at 12:04 PM, prompting the deployment of a team from the Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to the scene.
He said the fire and rescue team arrived at the foot of the hill at 12:35 PM before trekking for approximately 45 minutes to reach the incident site, located about seven kilometers from the base.
“Initial checks revealed the male victim was unconscious. Operations personnel then brought the victim down to the foot of the hill using a Sked stretcher before handing him over to the Ministry of Health (MOH) for official confirmation.
“The victim’s partner, Marina, 57, who was hiking with him, was reported safe,” he said.
Mohd Salahuddin clarified that the incident was not caused by a landslide—as initially reported via the 999 emergency line—but rather by the victim falling into a hole that was formerly a water channel.
The operation involved personnel from the Cameron Highlands BBP, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Forestry Department, the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), and the MOH.
